Start With the Spec, Not the Label

Let's start with the direct answer: rich means too much fuel relative to air, and lean means too little fuel relative to air. If you're checking spark plugs, rich usually leaves black sooty carbon on the nose, while lean can leave the center electrode white, gray, or even blistered. That's why I like putting real inspections ahead of marketing language. The label may say "premium." The spec is what proves it.

Hub Centric Wheel Spacer: The Bore Is the Spec

A hub centric wheel spacer is supposed to do what the name says: center the wheel on the hub bore, not on the lug bolts alone. The two measurements I check first are the center bore diameter and the parallelism of the spacer faces.

The center bore needs to locate the wheel before torque. If the bore is too loose, the suspension stack can settle slightly on the bolts. If it's too tight, the spacer may not seat flush and you chase vibration after installation. What I don't want to see is a spacer sold as "fit all" with no stated center bore tolerance. A repeatable fit needs a measured number.

I compared two spacers side by side once. Both were black anodized, both had the same thickness and bolt pattern, and both looked identical from across a workbench. One had a center bore machined to +0.05 mm relative to the hub. The other had a bore that was opened up by roughly 0.2 mm for "easier installation." The looser one mounted fine on a bench but produced measurable runout on the car. On the balancer it looked fine. On the road it was a slow vibration. That's the kind of gap quality reviews exist to catch.

If you are in an area like Buffalo, add salt to the discussion. Bare aluminum spacers on a steel hub can corrode over winter. 6061-T6 is common, but coating and surface prep matter. Check the recommended lug torque, check whether the spacer extends the stud stack beyond the recommended amount, and do not use spacers just to make a wheel clear calipers if a properly offset wheel would do the same job with fewer stacked parts.

Yellow Fog Light Bulbs: Color Is a Clue, Not the Whole Answer

Yellow fog light bulbs exist for a reason: selective-yellow light typically has less glare in fog, rain, and snow than a pure white or blue-white source. Many aim for around 3000K. But when I put two yellow bulbs side by side in a test housing, the color matched and the beam didn't. The cheaper bulb had a less controlled pattern, with more light bleeding above the geometric cutoff. The more expensive bulb had a clean lower pattern.

Why does that matter? Because fog light performance is not just about color temperature. It's about emitter position, filament or LED chip location, driver electronics, and compatibility with the reflector or projector housing. If the light source isn't in the same position as the original bulb, the housing turns into a decorative light that doesn't help you see the road—or worse, causes glare for oncoming traffic.

A halogen yellow bulb is straightforward. An LED replacement is where I get careful. Some LED bulbs have cooling fans that create no mechanical issue, but many have a bulky driver collar that doesn't fit the dust boot. Others are advertised as "canbus ready" but still cause flicker or bulb-out warnings in cars with pulse-width-modulated voltage. I should add that my bench test doesn't decide legality. Check whether the bulb is road-legal in your local regulations; off-road-only bulbs should stay off-road.

Spark Plug Rich vs Lean: Read It Like a Test, Not a Tarot Card

Spark plug rich vs lean is one of the older diagnostics, but it's easy to over-read. Rich means the engine is delivering too much fuel relative to air. Lean means too little fuel relative to air. On a plug, a rich condition usually leaves black, dry, fluffy carbon across the nose and side electrode. A lean condition can leave the nose looking light gray or white, and in severe cases, the center electrode looks blistered or melted.

But plug color is a clue, not a standalone measurement.

Why? Because a plug can look tan from fuel additives while deposits are masking the real issue. Idling before removing plugs can create carbon that makes a healthy engine look rich. A lean condition can be intermittent and then get covered by normal cruising deposits. The correct way to read plugs is to do a controlled shutdown: get the engine up to operating temperature, hold a steady load for a few minutes, then cut the ignition and coast to a stop. Then pull the plugs and compare the nose and ground electrode to the photos in the service manual.

If you're dealing with a check engine light, the O2 sensor and fuel trim data will reach a conclusion faster than removing spark plugs. Spark plugs show what went wrong, but they often show it after the damage begins. Rich conditions can overheat the catalytic converter because unburned fuel burns there. Lean conditions can overheat combustion chambers, causing pre-ignition and even piston damage.

Continental Transmission Special Deals: What I Ask Before I Believe the Ad

My gut-versus-data rule applies here too. The data will tell you that quote B saves $400. My gut asks what quote B removed to get there. I've reviewed enough warranty claims to know that the most expensive repair is the one performed twice.

Suppliers certified to IATF 16949 should be able to provide process control records and material certifications. I don't want to make spec sheets sound like magic. A print tells you the required dimensions, but it doesn't install the part. A wheel spacer with perfect center bore tolerance can still fail if the lug nuts are the wrong length. A good yellow fog light bulb can still be aimed too high. A spark plug that looks correct can still be the wrong heat range for an engine. And a transmission rebuild needs someone with actual mechanical judgment, not just a stack of part numbers.

That's why I like the phrase "informed customer." An informed customer asks better questions and makes better calls.

At least, that's been my experience after years of looking at parts that people thought were "good enough." The expensive failures usually had one thing in common: someone trusted a label instead of verifying a spec. Verify a little, save a lot.
