A key stamped bracket for our client's mid-volume SUV had failed during installation. The hole was out of spec by 0.2mm. A tiny number, but it meant the part wouldn't fit. A thousand units in quarantine, a furious production manager, and a weekend I spent on the phone with a supplier who kept saying, "But you wanted the lowest price."
He wasn't wrong. I had chosen his quote. But he was also completely right about something else: I'd gotten exactly what I paid for.
The Surface Problem: Everyone Chases the Lowest Price

- Logistics & reliability: What's their lead time reliability? How proactive is their communication? Do we need to babysit every order?
- Post-sale support: If a die breaks or a part is out of spec, how fast do they react? Is there a local contact?
We don't just pick the cheapest supplier. We pick the one that offers the best value for the risk profile of the job. For a simple, low-volume spacer, a basic shop might be fine. For a critical aluminum extrusion or a complex forging die, I'll pay a premium for a partner who has proven they can deliver consistently.
This isn't just theory. In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, we moved business away from two low-cost, high-hassle suppliers. The average unit price actually went up by 4%. But our admin time on those parts dropped by 60%, defect rates fell to near zero, and we haven't had a single line stoppage related to those components. That's the real math.
Simple Advice for the Next RFQ
I'm not saying you should always buy the most expensive option. Price matters. But it's not the only number that matters. Next time you're comparing quotes for automotive stampings, dies, or CNC parts, stop and ask:
- What's the total expected cost over a year, not just the per-part price?
- What's the cost of my own time managing this vendor?
- What's the risk cost if the parts are late or bad?
